Why Most Diets Don’t Work

By Nathan Latvitis Ever thought of, known someone, or gone on a diet? You probably have. The word diet seems like a common word for someone who is unsatisfied with their current physical condition. The problem is that most diets usually end up failingin the long run. Going on a diet usually refers to eating alot less food, in the hope that it will make us lose those unwanted pounds of fat. Although there are different types of diets, 90% of them stress a strong reduction in calories one way or another. Everyone has a certain amount of calories that they require per day to keep themselves alive and to perform bodily processes. This requirement of calories is known as Resting Metabolic Rate or RMR for short. For the purpose of this article, we will use my body as an example. My RMR is about 2500 calories/day. I will eat about 2500 calories to just keep myself alive. Note: You can calculate your RMR at http://www.weight-loss-resources.com/calculators/rmr.html On another note, our bodies adapt to the stimuli that they are exposed to. For instance, when one lifts weights their body adapts by growing muscle, when one runs long distances their bodies adapt by building more capillaries to enhance blood flow, when one is exposed to cold temperatures their body begins to shiver in an attempt to create heat through muscle contractions, etc. The point is our bodies adapt to essentially everything that they are exposed to, including how many calories we eat per day. So, when our bodies are exposed to a calorie deficit (a lower number of calories than our RMR) they must adapt. Lets say that I want to go on a diet and I begin to eat 1000 calories a day instead of the normal 2500 (Actually, I eat more than 2500 calories because I exercise and perform daily activities. 2500 only accounts for the calories needed to keep my body alive. Although for the sake of simplicity, we are only using the RMR. If the message within these parentheses confused you, simply ignore it.) One of the first ways my body is going to adapt is by using up my fat stores to make up for the lack of calories. This is why most diets seem to work in the beginning. The thing is, the body does not want to keep using its precious fat stores for energy. The human body does not see fat as a bad thing; it is a backup mechanism for when a calorie deficit is introduced. Now heres the kicker. Since my body is not going to want to keep using up its fat stores, it is going to adapt by lowering how many calories my body needs per day to keep itself running (RMR). One of the main ways it accomplishes this is by eating away at its own muscle. Instead of requiring 2500 calories a day to keep my body running, my body will eventually adapt over a period of time and only require 1000 calories to keep running. Back when our ancestors lived they needed this calorie adaptation to survive when food was short and they were starving. The trouble is, the body cannot tell the difference between starvation and dieting. Now that my bodys RMR has adjusted to the new number of calories that Im are eating, it no longer needs to use its emergency fat stores to keep itself alive. This is when your fat loss stops from a diet. In addition to this, if I decide that I want to go off of my 1000 calories a day diet and begin to eat 2500 calories a day again then there is a calorie surplus. The body does not need these extra calories so it will store them as fat. The exception to storing them as fat is when the body needs to build muscle because it has been exposed to some type of exercise or weight lifting, and even then all of the calories are not used for muscle growth. Now that I have changed my RMR to 1000 calories per day, I have really wrecked my metabolism and its going to be harder to get to my goal of actually losing fat. That is, unless of course If I want to stay on my diet forever. So what is the best way to lose fat without messing up my metabolism (RMR)? A calorie deficit is required to lose weight, but eating less is not the only way to create a calorie deficit. Another safer way is to exercise. More detail can be found on this in Tom Venutos book Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, which is located at http://www.weight-loss-resources.com. Marriage - Terrorists And the Sanctity of Marriage

By Lance Winslow Some have compared the gay and lesbians far-left fringe as marriage terrorists or gay-terrorists, but is that really a fair assessment. After all the gay and lesbian community only want the rights we all share to be married right? Well, not according to the Christian Right who clearly quote verse after verse in their bible and state their mantra that marriage is between a man and a woman. But is gay marriage really the evil that the Christian Right is calling it, or has fundamentalism of religion and the inability of government to separate Church and State really the problem here. As the debate rages on it is clear that the chaos and controversy over gay marriage is not going away anytime soon. In fact it may take the gay and lesbian community longer than expected to win the war to allow for gay marriage, but inevitably it will come forth as all things change. Remember women once could not vote and black people once were not free. Should we perhaps look at history and understand that all things happen in time and allow the gay and lesbian community to coach and mentor their fringe so they are not so in your face on this issue? Then perhaps in three or maybe four years go and re-visit all of this again? It makes sense for us as a nation to not divide over this issue or allow one sides fringe or the other to go on some sort of rampage against the whole of society. Lets all consider this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. The Ten Suggestions of God

By Gary Kurz Most of us have heard preachers passionately warn in their sermons, “They are not the ten suggestions; they are the ten commandments”. Factually, no one can argue that point. Indeed, no one should argue that point. God gave us commandments. He did not mince his words. He said “thou shall” and “thou shall not”. Practically speaking however, as we apply the commandments to our lives, we might do well to consider them as being suggestions as well. In no way does this diminish the authoritative intent of these providential edicts. Rather, acknowledging the suggestive tone of the commandments underscores the importance of obeying them and reflects a little more on how they should impact positively upon our lives. As commandments, or law, we all fail miserably at keeping them. Is there one who has not lied? Is there one who has not coveted? The question is rhetoric as scripture already provides the answer for us in Romans 3:23 (kjv), where it says: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. The chapter goes on to tell us that all are guilty before God. When an elderly preacher was asked by a young Christian what the word “all” meant in that verse, the wise old servant replied “All means all and that is all, all means”. In other words, the verse says not some, not many, not even most, but all are guilty of sin and all have broken the commandments. Armed with this knowledge, one might question why God gave us the commandments at all. If we were all not able to keep them, if we were all guilty of breaking them in God’s eyes, then why even go through the drill of trying to keep them? Is God testing us? Is God tricking us? Is he being some kind of a bully, who, because he has the power, can just force his will upon us and order us to keep his commandments, or else? If one views the commandments exclusively as commandments, one might arrive at that incorrect conclusion. However, if we also view the commandments as guidance or suggestions on how to live our lives, we can draw a clearer picture on just why God gave them to us. Simply, God knows us. He made us. He searches hearts and knows the inner-most thoughts of men and women. He understands our old nature and how it contrasts with his holiness. In a perfect world (which he tried to give to us) we would live righteously and holy. There would be no need for commandments, because there would be no sin. Of course, this is not a perfect world. Sin is present and often wields great influence over people, even Christians. Knowing our propensity to give in to temptation, God gave us commandments that would educate us about sin. That is why he referred to the law as our “schoolmaster” in the epistles. He didn’t lay these commandments upon us because he is the boss and we have to listen to him. He gave them to us because he loves us. He knew the hardships and suffering that would come from doing evil and he wanted to protect us from all of that. God knows that if we steal, for example, it will hurt not only those we steal from, but it will hurt us as well. First, there are the ramifications that come if one is caught stealing. You may be tasked with making restitution to those you stole from. You may be assigned many hours of arduous community service. You may even be incarcerated. Next, there comes societal scorn and a ruined reputation as you are branded a thief. You lose friends and credibility. You have a record and authorities keep close tabs on you and your activities. It is harder to find good work. Generally, everything in life becomes a little bit more difficult for you. Finally, if the previous results do not deter you from stealing again, your conscience might grow weak it will become easier for you to steal again. Eventually, you will lose your conscience altogether and become progressively more reprobate. Breaking any of the commandments can have similar disastrous effects upon your life and upon the lives of those you love. For that reason, the commandments become practical suggestions on how you should conduct yourself in life. Moreover, as suggestions or guidance, the commandments carry promises or rewards with them. For example, we are told in the fifth commandment that if we honor our father and our mother, our life will be long on the earth. As commandments, an “or else” connotation is inferred, but as suggestions for living righteously we are given positive incentives. Without doubt, the commandments should first be viewed as commandments. They are the will of God for mankind. But they should also be viewed as providential tutorials for successful living, where God offers good results for those who keep them. We are faced with many decisions in life. God has given us free will to make choices. This free will to choose applies to the Ten Commandments. You may choose to abide by them or you may choose to ignore them. You have free will. If you want a long and successful life, God’s counsel, God’s suggestion, is that you incorporate these ideals into your life. The author is a Baptist Preacher and Bible Teacher. Heads I Win, Tails You Lose

By David J. Moore In a time when public scrutiny is becoming tighter and more pervasive businesses have learned that they need to be on guard more than ever to ensure they are operating by ethical standards. Though not often mentioned in this discussion, I believe it is especially true of Christian organizations in whom trust is placed by donors. The old adage heads I win, tails you lose has a particular bite on this that says ouch. Thats not the way its supposed to be. John Dalla Costa, in his book The Ethical Imperative, provides numerous examples of businesses that sought to play by this rule. By cutting ethical corners (playing games of delay and dodge when it came to expenses for health and safety requirements) many were winning the economic game in the short run, but losing over the long-term through fines, restrictions, and erosion of public confidence. By covering up illegal employee practices and denying basic benefits as a reward for helping to make the company profitable they again saved money, over the short term only to see the long-term effects of this neglect take an economic toll in the form of low employee morale and employee lawsuits. Many of the business Dalla Costa cites are no longer in existence. For them it was heads I win temporarily, tails I lose permanently. What can Christian non-profit organizations learn from this? For one, boards need to be more involved. Many Christian organizations have boards that trust the organizations management to operate by ethical standards. They meet and simply listen to the glowing reports of success without asking probing nature. Secondly, Christian organizations need to pay close attention to its employee practices. This is the biggest area of litigation faced by non-profits today. Third, Christian organizations need to exercise care in ensuring donor intentions are adhered to in the application and usage of contributions. Fourth, Christian organizations should put in place appropriate internal control procedures to ensure that financial transactions are handled with care and efficiency. Many well meaning Christian ministries advertise themselves with lofty Christian ideals, such as- We operate at the highest levels of integrity. In all our decisions we are guided by the lordship of Christ. The worth and value of every individual is given the highest respect. The list could go on an on. The point is these are all subjective statements that cannot be measured in any rational way. And when perception becomes the guiding instrument through which evaluation of business practices takes place, it makes any challenge to leadership anathema. The landscape of Christian organizations gone sour as a result of focus on short-term gains at the expense long-term effectiveness, and at the expense of honesty and full disclosure, is dotted with embarrassing examples of ministries that have been less than circumspect in their principles of operation. These kinds of organizations may not have the luxury of changing their business practices based on boards waking up to the realities of what has been happening or leaders realizing they need to be more forthcoming in their standards. New laws brought on by the scandals of Enron and other public corporations are casting their shadows over the private sector as well. When Christian organizations are forced into correction by the public sector rather than by their own policies and governing boards the whole scenario is changed. It is still heads I win, tails you lose, but the loser becomes the ministry that has allowed itself to sacrifice long-term effectiveness for short-term gain. The other side of the coin, quite literally, is public shame, humiliation, and embarrassment. Trying to beat the odds of the consequences of public scrutiny is a coin toss in which a Christian organization would not want to become a participant. David J. Moore is Vice President of Research and Development for Compassion Alliance, a humanitarian aid ministry with offices in Nixa, Missouri and Ocala, Florida. He also teaches part-time at a local University. He has years of experience in the non-profit sector, including having served for 8 years as a college president. Weight Loss Tip: Drink More Water

By Kathy Burns-Millyard Water plays a vital role in losing weight: It helps you feel full so you don’t eat as much, it helps all of the important organs in your body dispose of waste, which in turn allows your body to burn fat better and faster. Water has no calories, so you can have as much of it as you’d like. It also helps flush toxins out of the body, gives you more energy, and keeps your skin healthy too. Since it also helps you feel fuller, drinking water will prevent you from eating more food than you should. And of course, eating less helps you lose weight. Some say that drinking cold water also helps boost your metabolism slightly. Theoretically: Your body needs a tiny bit more energy to warm the water, thus it could use a fraction more energy when processing it. I don’t know if this is true or not unfortunately, but I personally don’t think it hurts. Here are a couple of easy ways to be sure you’re drinking enough water: First: Start your day with a glass of water. As soon as you wake up, gulp down a glass of cool water. Your body has been without fluids for 6-8 hours, so it’s probably dehydrated. Drinking a tall, cool glass of water as soon as you wake up is a wonderful way to start you day. It also helps make you feel full, so you’ll eat less for breakfast. A glass of water also lets out all your digestive juices and jump starts your internal organ functionality, plus it gets your metabolism kicked in. So even if you want coffee or tea first thing in the morning, have that glass of water too. It’s a great step towards losing weight. I personally drink a big cup of water while waiting for the coffee to finish brewing. Next: Drink a glass of water before you start a meal. Water helps make your stomach feel full, so drinking a glass before eating - or at the very least while eating - will help you eat less food. Have another glass of water while you’re having the meal. Again this is another way of making yourself full so that you can actually rise from the table eating less but feeling full just the same. Instead of drinking it one gulp, take sips after each morsel. It will help the food to settle faster so that you get that feeling that you are full faster. Last but not least: Use a straw when you’re drinking water. It actually helps you drink more without even realizing it. Need more help with your weight loss efforts? Advantages Of Pre-Marriage Live-Together

By Tapan Sarkar Many marriages fail because of wrong expectations from the association. Most of the young people enter into marriage expecting it to be a life long party where the other partner is the host. Marriage demands taking responsibility, maturity and mutual adjustment. But there is no way a young person can perceive reality and shape his/her expectations accordingly. Dating a person can give only a partial or distorted picture of things to be expected. Now question is: can living together help in this situation. Staying together with the person one intends to marry without being legally tied, do help in certain aspects. Living together can be an excellent opportunity to know each other, and get a feel of what being together demands and how being married is different from dating the opposite sex. If staying together makes the attraction and mutual understanding deeper and the participants feel the urge to spend the rest of their life with each other then they can go ahead and tie the knot. The decision will be a matured one. And the marriage will have good chance of success. But if in case the period of togetherness fails to deepen mutual love both will be free to go their own way without any bitterness and legal formalities. This article is authored by Tapan Sarkar. Sony Ericsson Phones to Build on the Popularity of Walkman brand

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Hanna]Michael Hanna With the mobile phone marketplace increasingly competitive and the major phone manufacturers needing to diversify and update continually, we look at Sony Ericsson’s use of the Walkman brand to keep at the head of the pack. Coke, Nike, McDonalds, Starbucks and the Sony Walkman perhaps these brands have the status as the most recognisable and iconic brands of the last century. To attain such a prestige position in the social consciousness is a marketers dream and one that should be capitalised on. Take the Sony Walkman, a brand that emerged first in the late 1970’s and attained an unparalleled position as the most recognised consumer or electronic good throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Even with the emergence of MP3 technology and the shift of music from cassettes and CD’s to files, the Walkman brand still pervades in the mind of those of us old enough to remember the mid 1980’s. Little wonder, then than Sony are reincarnating the Walkman in as many formats as possible to try and capitalise on the brand awareness that the Walkman still manages to conjure up. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the recent ranges of mobile phones from Sony Ericsson. The Walkman branding came back in a big way at the beginning of 2006 with the release of a range of Walkman branded [http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/sonyericssonphones.html ]Sony Ericsson Phones. Recognising the movement towards MP3 technology within the mobile phone market, Sony wasted no time in reeling out the old star brand and stamping it over its’ range of phones to herald in the new era of music player capability within mobile handsets. The Walkman range of phones (or W range) is squarely aimed at music lovers and most of the handsets include a 512 MB memory card to support the handsets MP3 capabilities. The existing range of phones are best sellers and needless to say that an update range of Walkman branded phones is in the [http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=gb&lc=en&ver=4000&template=ph1&zone=ph ]Sony Ericsson pipeline. Second time around and in a different marketplace and in a completely different landscape as far as music consumption and storage is concerned, the Walkman is a star again. The mobile phone industry is a perfect fit for Walkman and Sony recognises this. The nature of the Walkman, portable, fashionable, ubiquitous the only regret for Sony might be that MP3 technology did not emerge 5 years before it eventually did. If that were the case, the Sony Ericsson might be looking at an even larger slice of the handset manufacturer than it does now. 5 Tips to Losing Weight While Keeping Your Sanity

By Craig Rowe Losing weight is the goal of many individuals worldwide however there is no simple way to drop the pounds like taking a pill or simply wishing them away. Unfortunately, losing weight takes determination and commitment to a healthy diet and exercise plan and even then it takes longer than we would like to drop those extra pounds. So, what can you do to lose weight and keep your sanity? The following five tips should help you out. Tip #1 Lower Your Expectations If you begin an exercise or diet plan, or both, and have heard you will lose incredible amounts of weight in no time at all and then it doesnt happen then you feel let down and wont have the same dedication to carry on and your diet fails miserably. However, if you are more realistic to begin with and realize that most people lose 1-2 pounds per week on a healthy exercise and diet plan then you will be better informed and can expect these types of results ahead of time rather than being disappointed. Tip #2 Dont Tell Everyone You are Dieting When people first start diets they tell everyone they are dieting and their great weight loss plans. However, this can frequently work against you because people will talk and judge your weight loss progress and make you feel uncomfortable, especially if you eat something others dont believe is part of your diet plan. This will give you a complex, so simply start your diet, inform close family and friends for support, and keep your dieting to yourself and you wont go crazy. Tip #3 Dont Eliminate a Food Group Many times when you eliminate a complete food group from your diet you feel as if you are really sacrificing too much and you will simply lose your sanity and your diet will fail. On the other hand, if you eat a well balanced diet and allow yourself little treats along the way you will lose weight and keep your sanity as well. Tip #4 Household Support When you start a diet you need to make sure the entire household will support you in your efforts. If you are not eating sugar yet your spouse continues to come home with cookies, ice cream, and doughnuts then you will have a hard time sticking to the diet and you wont feel much support, either, which will drive you crazy. So, make sure your entire family is ready to support you and if they choose to eat unhealthy to do it away from the home. Tip #5 Work Out Losing weight takes a lot of time, which can really test your sanity. However, if you include a work out routine with your diet then you will see a much quicker weight loss, have more energy, sleep better, and simply feel better about yourself. This will help you keep your sanity and stay true to your weight loss plan. When you follow these five tips you will be able to keep your sanity while staying on your diet and exercise plan better than if you give it a try all on your own. Loans - Improve Your Chances for Approval

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell]Michael Russell If you are in need of a business or real estate loan, there are steps you can take that greatly improve your chance of success. The first and most obvious is to make sure your credit rating or FICO score is as high as possible. When you apply for a business or real estate loan, the lender will “pull your credit report” to see if you are credit worthy. Did you know that every time someone “pulls’ your report it causes your credit rating to go down? If you have a credit score of 680 at the start, you may find it goes down to 650 after you allow several credit reports to be pulled. It’s important to realize that you have control over this. No one can pull your credit report unless they have your permission. This puts you in control. When you first meet with the loan officer, instruct him not to pull your credit report until you are ready. Tell him that you want to discuss the entire deal with him before you give him permission to pull your credit report. Most loan officers will agree to this. The reason you want to do this is two-fold. First, you want to show the loan officer that you are the kind of person who takes control of the situation instead of someone who is controlled by outside factors. Never forget the human element when applying for a loan. If you make a good impression on the lender you have a better chance of being approved for the loan. Lay out the entire deal for the loan officer. Ask him if he believes that you have a good chance of being approved for the loan by the loan committee. Show him that you respect his opinion. Once he has reviewed all the information he should be able to determine whether or not you qualify for the loan. If his answer is positive, then you can give him permission to pull your credit report. Another reason for taking this approach is that by waiting for a tentative yes or no answer from the loan officer, you avoid the possibility that your FICO score will drop because of “too many inquiries” on your credit report. Taking this “wait and see” approach allows you to project a professional image that will command respect by the person reviewing your loan application and it will protect your credit rating. This leads us to another step you can take to help insure your success, be knowledgeable. Make sure you do all necessary research before meeting with the Loan officer. When you come to the meeting looking prepared, you will give the appearance of being a professional. This will increase your credibility with the Loan officer. Also, never be too anxious when applying for a loan. Lenders will suspect problems if you come in saying “time is of an essence”. It’s much better to project a “laid back” attitude. Remember, the Loan officer’s job is to determine your ability to pay off the loan back according to the agreed upon terms.
